THE EXPERIENCE

One of the best trekking circuits is the one that combines the Esmeralda Lagoon with the Ojo de Albino glacier. The tour starts twenty kilometers north of Ushuaia, at the foot of the Andes in an area known as Tierra Mayor valley. There are two shelters in the area that are a good option to spend the night before the trek: Solar del Bosque and Nunatak. The Esmeralda Lagoon is a body of glacial origin, which collects the melt waters of the Albino Glacier. It is located at 450 meters above sea level, within an ancient lenga forest, and surrounded by mountains of sharp silhouette, some with hanging glaciers that can be admired by the visitor from a privileged position.

The name of the lagoon alludes to the incredible color of its waters. In winter, the activity is done walking through the snowy valleys with snowshoes, which requires a few minutes of adaptation and an explanatory talk.

Itinerary details

Partida desde el hotel por vía terrestre (20 kms) hasta el inicio del sendero. Desde allí se inicia la caminata durante la cual atravesamos túrbales y centenarios bosques de Lengas y Cohiues. La posibilidad de avistar zorros, cóndores y castores está siempre latente.

Nos encontramos en el corazón de la Reserva Natural y Paisajística Tierra del Fuego. Llegamos a la Laguna Perdida con el impresionante color de sus aguas y su ubicación geográfica en plena cordillera fueguina. Desde allí penetraremos hacia el principal afluente de la Laguna Perdida, que tiene su naciente en el glaciar Ojo de Albino.

Arribamos al glaciar que nos sorprenderá con espectáculo dantesco de hielo y montañas. Nos colocamos nuestros grampones e iniciamos la exploración del glaciar. Arribamos al mirador del Beban donde almorzamos. Continuamos la travesía, con paradas en puntos panorámicos de impactante belleza. Regreso al inicio del sendero y retorno al Hotel. Y nos preparamos para una próxima experiencia!
